A Fascinating Aviation History

The story of CVG started during World War II. In February 1942, the United States government, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, gave the initial go-ahead for the construction of the Greater Cincinnati Airport. This was a result of a larger U.S. Army Air Corps program designed to construct training infrastructure. The selected location was ideal due to its ability to solve the problem faced by the existing airport, the Lunken Airport. 

This particular airfield, which was situated in the Ohio River Valley region of Cincinnati, suffered from frequent flooding and fog. The airfield officially opened for business on August 12, 1944. On August 15, 1944, practice flights for B-17 bombers began at this airfield. Despite the fact that the war was coming to an end soon after this, and therefore limiting the use of this airfield, it gained historical recognition in September 1944. During this period, CVG became one of the early sites in the United States contributing to the development of regularly scheduled air freight operations.

Currently, the airport operates using one terminal that includes two concourses with 51 gates each, and access is gained through the underground moving walkways and people mover facility.
