Hobby Airport was initially opened in June 1927 as a private landing field named W.T. Carter Field. By the 1930s, the airport was being flown by large airlines such as Braniff International Airways and Eastern Air Lines. It was later renamed Houston Municipal Airport in 1937, and changed its name a few times, and was finally renamed in 1967 as William P. Hobby Airport after the late Texas governor.
The airport was a major feature of U.S. aviation history. Here in 1943, the first three classes of Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) were conducted. In the 1940s and 1950s, Hobby served international flights to South America, Mexico, and Europe. The jet age came to the airport in the 1960s, and the airport received nonstop flights to New York, Los Angeles, and other parts of the world.
The current Hobby Airport covers 1,304 acres and has three runways. It is the base of operation of Southwest Airlines that provides both domestic and international flights. Southwest inaugurated its first international terminal in 2015 at Hobby, linking Houston to Mexico, Central America, and South America. In 2022, Skytrax was announced as the first 5-Star Airport in North America.
The airport consists of one terminal that is split into two concourses: the Central Concourse, which has 25 gates, primarily used by domestic flights, and the West Concourse, which has five gates that are used by international flights. Hobby Airport has also adopted modern technology, and it is the first airport in Texas to provide complete biometric entry and exit for international travelers.

Hobby Airport can be easily reached with the help of different ground transport means. METRO buses serve the airport, downtown Houston, and other neighborhoods. Travelers have easy access to ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft, taxis, and hotel courtesy vans. For people who do not travel within Houston, some shuttles connect them to Galveston, College Station, and other regions around Houston.
Hobby Airport is a place not only associated with flights but also with an appreciation of art and culture. The Air Terminal Museum of 1940 holds the history of aviation in Houston, and the big art installations, such as Take-off, a stainless steel bird nest sculpture, reflect the creativity and industrialism of Houston.
Southwest Airlines is still growing at Hobby Airport (HOU). In 2024, a project started with a cost of 470 million that will be completed by 2027, which will increase the number of gates in the West Concourse, increasing domestic and international traffic. As the growth continues, Hobby Airport will continue to play an important role in the transportation system of Houston.
William P. Hobby Airport is a mix of history and modern travel. It has grown from just a small airport to a 5-star airport, serving millions of passengers with smooth and comfortable journeys. With new expansion planned, Hobby will keep connecting people, making travel easy, and carrying Houston’s spirit into the skies.
