Newark Liberty International Airport is among the best destinations to fly into the New York metropolitan area. It is also commonly referred to as EWR and is a blend of history, connectivity, and modern infrastructure, thus making the airport a major entry point to both local and international travel.
Newark Airport is only a few miles down the line from Manhattan and accommodates millions of passengers each year, and is ever-increasing to become one of the busiest aviation centers in the United States.
The history of Newark Liberty can be traced back to 1928, when the City of Newark started excavation of its 68 acres of reclaimed marshland along the U.S. Route 1. The result of all this was the inauguration on October 1, 1928, of one of the first commercial airports in the United States and the first paved airstrip. It is no small footnote that Newark basically wrote the playbook that is aviation infrastructure today.
The milestones continued to appear. Here, in 1930, one of the earliest airports to implement air traffic control systems. In 1935, the Art Deco Administration Building with murals by the famous artist Arshile Gorky was dedicated by Amelia Earhart herself, becoming one of the first passenger terminals in the United States. In 1952, Newark was the first airport to support nighttime operations by illuminating the runways. These were not incremental advances - they defined innovations in the industry.
The name of the airport is meaningful as well. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, and, in particular, the heroic incident on United Airlines Flight 93, which took off at Gate A17 in Newark, in 2002, the airport was renamed as the Newark Liberty International Airport as a tribute to the victims and to the spirit of the nearby statue of Liberty.
Newark Liberty International Airport is a strategic entry point to the New York metropolitan region, approximately 9 miles away in Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. It is the second-busiest airport in the area after the John F. Kennedy International Airport and before the LaGuardia Airport.
Having good global connectivity, EWR has flights to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and South America, and thus it is a favorite destination for local and international travelers. United Airlines also has a major base at the airport, which serves a large proportion of passengers here.
There are also three major terminals within Newark Airport, each of which is designed to address the needs of various airlines and passengers in an efficient manner.
Terminal A: Modernized and redeveloped recently, Terminal A provides a comfortable passenger experience, equipped with modernized facilities, improved check-ins, and a spacious interior.
Terminal B: This is the terminal that primarily serves international flights and has several international airlines. It also has customs and immigration services.
Terminal C: Terminal C is a hub that serves as the main home of domestic and international services of United Airlines, which is controlled by United Airlines.
The AirTrain connects each terminal, making transfers simple and convenient.
Newark Airport is constructed to accommodate large air traffic, having an efficient runway system and a well-laid-out plan.
Total Area:2000 acres
Runways:
4L/22R (takeoff primary)
4R/22L (primarily on landings)
11/29 (use in smaller aircraft or crosswinds)
Helipad: Helicopter services are available.
There is also a taxiway of more than 12 miles in the airport to minimize delays and maximize aircraft movement.
The transportation network at Newark Airport is good and allows easy access to and out of the airport.
AirTrain Newark is a train connecting all terminals, parking lots, and rail stations.
NJ Transit and Amtrak are the railways that have direct connections to the largest cities.
Major Highways: Interstate 95, Interstate 78, and U.S. Route 1/9.
Taxi and Ride Services are very common.
This smooth connectivity renders EWR as being among the most accessible airports in the area.
Newark Airport serves a huge population of passengers annually; hence, it remains among the busiest in the world.
More than 45-50 million passengers a year (recent high)
Approximately, there are 50 airlines in operation.
United Airlines largest hub.
The airport provides flights to hundreds of destinations in the world and therefore a high global connectivity.
EWR is not only a passenger travel location, but also a huge cargo hub.
Close to 1 million square feet of cargo area.
The vicinity of Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal
Services more than 45 air carriers.
This renders it a key international trade and logistics hub.
Newark Liberty International Airport is not an ordinary airport; it is a critical entry point to the rest of the world where millions of travelers can be found. Its contemporary upgrades, rich history, and great connectivity make EWR one of the best airports in the New York region.
You may be on a business trip or on leisure, but a visit to Newark can make the first step of your journey easier and more convenient.
