Whenever individuals consider flying into Central Florida, the first place that comes to mind is the Orlando International Airport. However, only 30 km south-southwest of downtown Orlando is another aviation jewel—Kissimmee Gateway Airport (IATA: ISM). This is a long-established general aviation facility in Osceola County, Kissimmee, and it has impressive facilities and a significant role in promoting general aviation in the area.
Airport Codes: IATA- ISM, ICAO- KISM, FAA LID- ISM
Location: Kissimmee, Osceola County, Florida (approximately 30 km southwest of downtown Orlando)
Airport Authority: This is the City of Kissimmee-owned and operated
Airport Size: 892 acres
Elevation: 80 feet (24 m)
Runways:
Runway 15/33: 6,001 ft in length and 100 ft in width, with ILS and medium-intensity approach lights
Runway 6/24 - 5,001 ft long and 100 ft wide, asphalt with medium-intensity lighting
The table below shows the distance and the estimated drive time of the major airports in the area to the Kissimmee Gateway Airport (ISM):

Kissimmee Gateway Airport (formerly known as Kissimmee Municipal Airport) is an airport owned and managed by the City of Kissimmee. ISM does not have scheduled passenger flights as compared to bigger commercial airports. Rather, it is primarily used by private aircraft, air taxis, flight schools, and aviation companies.
The airport is technically known as a general aviation reliever airport of Orlando International Airport (MCO), implying that it alleviates air traffic congestion by accommodating smaller airplanes and private flights.

ISM has two asphalt runways, which are 892 acres:
Runway 15/33: 6,001 feet long and 100 feet wide with ILS (Instrument Landing System), precision markings, and medium-intensity approach lights.
Runway 6/24: 5,001 feet long and 100 feet wide with medium-intensity lighting and non-precision marks.
Both runways are well-maintained and suitable for various aircraft types. They are capable of supporting single-wheel, two-wheel, and tandem aircraft. The airport also has a control tower to control the day-to-day traffic safely.
Kissimmee Gateway is a general aviation center. It has approximately 150,000 aircraft operations in a normal year, with an average of more than 400+ takeoffs and landings daily. These operations include:
98% general aviation (training, business, and private flights)
2% air taxi services
Less than 1 percent of military and commercial activity.
According to recent FAA data, about 240 aircraft are based at ISM, comprising single-engine aircraft, multi-engine aircraft, jets, helicopters, and a glider.
Kissimmee Gateway Airport has one of the most remarkable attractions, the World War II aircraft restoration facilities. Aviation lovers will be delighted to see workshops devoted to restoring historic military aircraft to flying status, a unique and interesting service.
The airport also hosts several flight schools and charter services as well as maintenance providers, and it is a destination for both would-be pilots and aviation professionals.
The history of Kissimmee Gateway Airport in American aviation is very deep. It was initially opened in April 1940 as Kissimmee Army Airfield, a tactical training facility of the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II. The base was used extensively in combat simulation training until 1945, when it was shut down and returned to civilian use.
The airport had a brief commercial period in the late 1970s, with Air Sunshine flights to Miami and Tampa, but is now dedicated to general aviation.
Although you will not be booking a commercial ticket into the ISM, the airport is critical in facilitating the aviation requirements of Central Florida. Its use as a reliever airport to the Orlando International Airport facilitates easy operations in one of the most active travel areas in the United States.
Moreover, its active aviation community, the presence of a unique history, and the provision of specialized aircraft services make it a vital center for pilots, aviation students, and fans as well.
When you are visiting Kissimmee or Orlando, you might not land at the Kissimmee Gateway Airport, but more likely than not, your flight training session, your own charter, or even a refurbished WWII airplane has landed here. Kissimmee Gateway Airport (ISM) is not simply a runway; it is a gateway to the aviation history and the aviation prosperity of Florida.
