Imagine this: you are in a plane, and there you have the window seat as the skyline of New York City comes into view. The Statue of Liberty is the first to come into sight, next comes the Empire State Building, and the unending city lights welcome the descent of the airplane. And hey, the plane was not landing right in the middle of Manhattan (well, there is no airport in the area!). Instead, it came down just across the river at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)—the other major gateway into the Big Apple.
Situated in New Jersey, between the cities of Newark and Elizabeth, it is approximately 9 miles away from Manhattan. So, in case you are flying into New York, this is one of the best places you could be landing!
This airport dates back to 1928, and it was in fact the first large airport in the U.S. It is the second busiest in the New York region today, second to JFK and before LaGuardia. Indeed, it served more than 49 million passengers in 2023, which makes it the 13th busiest airport in the U.S. and the 23rd busiest airport in the world. That is a great number of passengers!
The airport has expanded over the years. Following World War II, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey assumed control and extended the runways, terminals, control tower, and even a large cargo area. It has one of the oldest buildings, dating back to 1935, which is so historic that it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The table below indicates the distance and estimated time it takes to travel by car to other major airports around New York from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR):
Note: The travel time depends on traffic, weather, and time. So, before you go out everywhere, always check on live maps or other such GPS!
The table presented below indicates the year-wise traffic of the passengers at Newark Liberty International Airport and the percentage increment or decrease as compared to the last year. There are a lot
of passengers each day, so to get cheap flights to New York, you can always book early.
Note:
There is a massive decline in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The recovery started in the year 2021 and reached its maximum in the year 2023.
In 2024, there is a slight downturn, which may be caused by the stabilization of travel after the pandemic.
The EWR Airport has three large terminals and various amenities and services provided by the staff.

The most recent entry is Terminal A, which opened early in 2023 and replaced the first terminal, constructed in 1973. The terminal is modern, dedicated to domestic and regional flights, and has a spacious design on three floors and a total of one million square feet. It has 3 concourses, A1, A2, and A3, which are all accessible through a single center security checkpoint where, once a passenger clears the security, they can move to the other three concourses.
Many services are available at Terminal A, including lounges, like the American Airlines Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club, and the United Club (mostly operated from Terminal C now), and a Centurion Lounge is scheduled to open in 2026. Some of the airlines that use this terminal include Air Canada, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta, and United. Its design and passenger experience have earned it awards, and it was rated by Skytrax as a 5-star airline.
Terminal B is mainly used as an international gateway to the Newark Airport. Although having three concourses, also, the passenger will also need to go through the security check once more when switching between them. Terminal B has a diversification of shops and restaurants, but the majority of these services are located in B1 and B3 concourses. Services that are present include lounges such as the British Airways Galleries Lounge, the Lufthansa Lounge, yet another Delta Sky Club, and the Scandinavian Airlines SAS Lounge.
Other services are rest areas, a quiet room, and medical offices. Global Entry kiosks, customs facilities, and TSA PreCheck enrollment are found in Terminal B. They are Allegiant Air, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, and Spirit Airlines, which are major airlines.
Terminal C is purely dedicated to the operations of United Airlines and its regional service, United Express. It was constructed in 1988 as well and has three concourses: C1, C2, and C3. Communication between these concourses allows passengers to move freely without checking security again. Terminal C services domestic and international flights.
It is known to have many dining and shopping places, which are ranked to be some of the best the East Coast has to offer. There are the United Polaris Lounges and various United Club lounges. Terminal C also offers charging stations, currency exchange, nursing rooms, pet relief stations, an interfaith chapel, and the welcome center for passengers.
