The Executive Airport of Fort Lauderdale (FXE) is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States. This airport is only five miles (8 km) north of downtown Fort Lauderdale, and it plays a very crucial role in supporting business, leisure, and international private travel in Broward County, Florida.
The airport is operated by the Transportation and Mobility Department of the City of Fort Lauderdale and is used as a reliever airport to the larger Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). This helps reduce congestion by accommodating smaller jets, corporate flights, and training flights.
Location: 5 miles (8 km) north of downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Area: 1,050 acres (420 ha)
Runways: Two (09/27 – 6,002 ft; 13/31 – 4,000 ft)
Operations per year: 160,000+
Based aircraft: 909+ (as per the data from 2017)
Customs facility: Yes, U.S. CBP on-site.
FBOs: Banyan Air, Atlantic Aviation, W Aviation, and FTL Executive Jet Center.
The history of Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is an interesting one. It was constructed in 1941 as West Prospect Satellite Field during World War II. It was then used to train Naval Aviators to the U.S. Navy.
After the war ended, the federal government sold the facility to the City of Fort Lauderdale in 1947. Since then, FXE has grown into a successful public airport.
The airport currently has more than 160,000 operations annually, placing it among the top 10 busiest general aviation airports in the U.S. This remarkable number shows its significance not only to South Florida but also to the whole aviation industry.
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport occupies 1,050 acres (420 hectares) of land with two well-paved asphalt runways:
Runway 09/27: 6,002 feet long (1,829 meters)
Runway 13/31: 4,000 feet long (1,219 meters)
These landing fields are capable of accommodating a large variety of aircraft, including small training planes and medium-sized business jets.
The airport also has:
24-hour Air Traffic Control Tower to operate round the clock.
Various multiple-instrument approach systems for safe landings in any weather.
Current hangars and maintenance facilities.
FXE is designated as a landing rights/customs airport, and international general aviation flights are allowed to clear U.S. Customs on-site (subject to scheduling and ramp availability).
Business traveler pilot lounges, conferences, and crew rest.
This is the convenience, safety and efficiency that make FXE a favorite among the flyers who are privately flying, corporate executives and the flight schools.
At FXE, safety is a top priority. The airport has a 24/7 Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit that is compliant with Index B standards; hence, it can respond to any emergency in a very short time.
These services are handled by the Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department, which provides on-site fire protection and medical response services. Although FXE maintains a very good safety record and implements strict safety rules.
FXE is a highly dynamic aviation hub. Estimating the number of aircraft operations handled by the airport is more than 160,000 in a 12-month period, with an average of 490 flights per day.
The breakdown includes:
General aviation (private and training flights): 94%
6% air taxi and charter services
Less than 1% military use
FXE has approximately 909 aircraft (as per the data from 2017), including:
52% single-engine airplanes
26% multi-engine airplanes
16% business jets
5% helicopters
This variety emphasizes the multi-faceted character of FXE—it is a place where private pilots, charter operators, flight schools, and corporate jet owners call home.
FXE is mainly a general aviation airport, but has witnessed semi-private flight activities over the past several years. For example, JSX - a public charter operator—offers flights from FXE to White Plains, New York, with a better premium boarding experience than the standard airlines.
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport has various Fixed Base Operators (FBOs), which provide world-class services to travelers, pilots, and aircraft owners.
Some of the top FBOs include:
Banyan Air Service: The largest FBO in FXE, with luxury lounges, aircraft maintenance, fueling, and avionics support.
FTL Executive Jet Center: Provides full-service operations and passenger facilities.
Atlantic Aviation: Offers fueling services, aircraft storage, and crew services.
W Aviation: Deals with VIP and international charters.
These FBOs ensure that FXE is one of the best-equipped executive airports in Florida that serves both domestic and international customers.
Just like most busy airports, FXE has gone through a number of aviation incidents over the decades. From the Douglas DC-3 accident in 1979 to the nose gear collapse of the Gulfstream in 2021, every accident resulted in stricter safety standards and better training of pilots.
Through these lessons and constant updates, FXE has been very dedicated to aviation safety and operational excellence.
The bright example of the city-owned airport balancing between modern aviation, care of the environment, and economic development is the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE).
It is not merely an airport where airplanes fly around, but it is an opening to business, innovation, and opportunity. You are flying in to have a meeting, training to get your pilot license, or boarding a private jet, FXE has it all—convenience, safety, and comfort.
